Newark’s Patton wins 100 at Licking County Honor Roll track meet

PATASKALA — The calendar says May, and Newark’s Tavisha Patton is ready.

“I need to improve on the times a little bit more,” Patton said. “In the 400, my time is getting better and better and back to up where it was when I broke the record. My 200 is coming up there, so I am starting to drop in that, as well.”

Licking Valley’s Mackenzie Butler nearly joined Patton as a multiple winner. Butler had to do it the hard way in the distance events.

Butler led the 1,600 throughout, but she had to hold off a late charge from Johnstown’s Meghan Schulze. Butler’s 5:18.49 just missed her the meet record of 5:18.12. Butler already was the meet-record holder in the 800, but Watkins Memorial’s Mara White pulled away and shattered her record by three seconds, winning in 2:21.29.

“It gives me somebody to pace off, and it gives you the extra drive to go faster the last 100 meters when normally if you are by yourself, you don’t have very much reason to go fast,” Butler said.

She lowered school record during the 2011 regional meet, but she placed sixth to fall just short of the state meet. She has been on a mission to take the next step.

Civil War History

Look Up Soldiers and Explore

The American Civil War is one of the defining moments in United States’ history. In commemoration of the lives lost and the battles fought, the National Park Service (NPS) created a new website highlight various aspects of the war. You can now find a detailed timeline of events from 1861-1865.

As brothers fought brothers in this deadly war, many lives were lost and families divided. You can search a soldier and sailor database of over 6 million records to find information on your ancestors or famous soldiers on either side of the battle. The NPS also highlights many key issues and events that lead to the start of the war. You can also find, view and plan visits to Civil War battlefields across the United States.

Donate Life recognizes local BMW for organ donor efforts

The Johnstown Bureau of Motor Vehicles has been recognized for increasing the number of people who last year registered as organ and tissue donors in the Ohio Donor Registry.

Donate Life Ohio’s “Organ, Tissue and Eye Donation Front Line Awards” are presented to the BMV locations with the highest donor registration rates or the greatest improvement in registration. The Johnstown BMV earned the “Most Improved in District 5” award for improving its donor registration rate from 59 percent in 2010 to 63.4 percent in 2011.

Rachel Lewis, media relations/community outreach coordinator for Lifeline of Ohio, said in a news release that the award belongs not just to Johnstown’s BMV staff members. “This award is as much a commendation of the generosity and compassion of the citizens of Johnstown” as it is of the BMV workers, Lewis said. Lifeline of Ohio coordinates the awards on behalf of Donate Life Ohio.

Each person who receives or renews a driver’s license or state identification card at an Ohio BMV location is asked, “Would you like to make an anatomical gift at the time of your death?”

Graduation Party

[divider]

High school graduation is a milestone you will want to celebrate, so make the graduation party fun and memorable with graduation party decorations and food.

Years from now, friends and family will remember your high school graduation party as one of the most remarkable graduation parties of the year! Your grad will thank you!

Planning the graduation party menu depends on the time of day you are having your graduation party.

Is your high school graduation party for brunch, in the afternoon as an open house, in the evening, or just for dessert? You can have appetizers, snacks or a buffet menu for your graduation party.

Ask your graduate what they would like to have for food.  If your grad’s favorite food is Chicken Wings, for example, serve Chicken Wings.
